Did these over a year ago now, still haven't used them but am slowly adding to my stack of 'clean' classic track. The top piece of track was the same as the lower piece.

As already said yes it can be done. at one time a Scaleaxtric set came with the option of running with a battery or main's elecricity. as a kid we didnt have electicity so I used an old Land Rover battery it used to last over two hours and then died very quickly. car set was Scalextric 65.
